Why I Photograph Playgrounds

In the early 2000s, I realized that playgrounds were a great place to take abstract photographs. Playground structures' colors, shapes, textures, angles, and shadows could all contribute to some really cool shots.

In 2006, "Playing Around Portland" (aka The Project) began: I went online, printed off a list of nearly every park with a playground in Portland, and began visiting them one by one. I didn't take photos at every park -- some just didn't have anything to inspire me. But others were a treasure trove of photographic bliss.

While on my quest to visit as many playgrounds in Portland as possible, I became aware of the fact that several of the playground structures I'd loved as a child had been replaced by newer (and often less interesting) models. I figured it was only a matter of time before the very structures I was photographing then would be ripped out to make way for new things. Documenting these playgrounds for posterity became a growing concern. And sure enough, several of these playgrounds have had big changes since 2006.

These days, I don't typically seek out new playgrounds, but if I happen to pass one that looks interesting, I may stop and take photos. I'm also trying to revisit playgrounds I've already photographed to see if and how they've changed.
