North Powellhurst School - SE Portland - 2.15.10 and 12.31.21

North Powellhurst School

Oh, glorious metal! How I do love thee! When I was in high school, North Powellhurst school was home to a preschool and the Head Start program. In 11th grade, one of my classes was essentially getting to run one of the preschool classes. And when it wasn't raining, we'd take the tykes outside to play on this very playground. Now, there is another play structure at this facility, which was built in the years since I graduated. And the building now houses multitudes of kindergarteners. But they've chosen to preserve this simple little playground, with its jungle gym, strange slide, swings, and monkey bars. The monkey bars come up to my waist, but they're a great size for training preschoolers to become good, strong little monkeys. And that, I think, is something we can all appreciate.

Location: SE 135th Ave., between Main and Mill

Update: 12-31-21

Several years ago, the wood-and-metal structure, the tiny monkey bars, and the orange and silver slide were removed to make way for some more modern items, including a small play structure, yellow tunnel, and butterflies-on-sticks that perhaps spin. The swing set remains, but how hosts two swings instead of three.
